the really good plot lines have the gun showing up in the opening, in the middle (suggesting a certain resolution) and then at the finale with a totally alternate ending

also, I treat Billy Gretch as something of an idiot. however, he'd do just fine in the majority of mankind's 200,000 years on Earth... on the balance, this is a completely appropriate reaction, and against three less skilled (and armed) opponents, he'd have even odds.
