Yeah, that is pretty random.

And yeah, that's the deep reservoir of pain that waters all of Dr. Maggie Ashton's professional efforts. (Thanks Prof for providing this all these years ago.)

This tidbit explains a lot about Maggie - while at the same time it's hard to weave naturally* into the dialogue, so it's no wonder it never came up until now...

* "Hi, I'm Dr. Ashton, and I can't conceive."

But is she fertile? You can be fertile (ie: working ovaries) but cannot implant a fertilized ovum (literally "Inconceivable").
There's always in vitro if her ova are impermeable to spermatozoa.
If she DOESN'T have working ovaries (including hormones - her body frame certainly suggests this) then she might still be able to CARRY a foetus to term.
The easiest solutions are surrogacy/ova donation, and this may be Maggie's (rather Aspergic) way of approaching Donna for this...

Not being as...intimately...familiar with Prof's characters, this could be due to a number of issues, from congenital to accidental. With the...unconventional...subjects that Maggie studies, and the lack of suitable test subjects (willing ones, anyway), I can see Maggie using herself as a guinea pig. The obvious parallel is Yennefer of Vengerberg, and look at how THAT turned out...

you know, I'm going to leave further explanations as TBD

of course, if Prof or Sophs wants to jump in I'd take their commentary as canon

I do have something in the works on how this eventually gets resolved but that's at least a few years down the road if ever

BTW - How did Donna sneak those condoms through TSA? There's enough gel-like materiel in them to blow out a section of cabin wall.

Unless, of course, the TSA agents gave them to her as a parting gift...
