The movie Goodfellas was based on the story of Henry Hill. He was in a Mafia family, but one day they told him to go to a meeting at a bar in a remote area. He was certain that if he went there he would be quietly murdered and his body disposed of, so instead he turned informer and went into the Witness Protection Program.

If I were Donna, this story would be on my mind at this moment.

I'm gonna make a wild guess that Henry Hill *didn't* get into that company car... it's a little late for Donna to bail on Gus!

If I recall correctly, Henry Hill went to the bar early to check it out. I'm not sure if he even went inside... he probably just drove past it and looked it over. He felt that it was a perfect place to kill someone and get away with it and he was certain this was planned for him.

When he testified against the Mafia, he told about a whole lot of crimes committed by a whole lot of people, but he never admitted to having committed any murders himself. But I suspect that he might have personally taken care of a few people at remote bars in his time and that might have informed his speculations.

I got this from reading the book Wiseguy (the source material from which the movie Goodfellas was made). Henry Hill said that the movie thing where the Mafia boss cusses you out and says "you betrayed the Family!" or whatever never happens. If they decide you are now a liability, they just have you killed by any convenient technique. Why yell at you and tip you off that you are in serious trouble? So much easier to just smile and say reassuring words and then have you killed.

Also, when he was in prison, he was basically dead to the Mafia. They didn't look after his wife or kids, they didn't help him out. Once he was out and could work again they remembered him again.

When he was a kid he saw "Wise guys" (Mafia) and thought they lived a glamorous life and he wanted to join them.

Reading that book did not make me want to join the Mafia.

can't find it, but I recall somewhere reading that mob boss Lucky Luciano said if he could do it all again, he'd do it straight, because that would've been easier

that line of work (crime) strikes me as just as difficult as any other line of work, except there are fewer guardrails--if your boss really doesn't like you, they won't stop at firing you, they'll fire a gun at you

yeah, why would you waste breath on a dude who you want dead? and why tip 'em off? Anyway, Gus doesn't want Donna dead, for reasons to be revealed over the next few pages
