Jen makes a fair point... someone's not performing up to their potential.

Jen's sister can be harsh?

*writes down characterization notes for Playground*
lirvilas 17th May 2020, 2:19 PM edit delete reply
dude, she [major spoilers]

if that's not the very definition of harsh, I don't know what is!

edit: when Jane and Jen or any of the Doyles know they're in the right, they don't pull their punches

Donna said her sister "was" harsh. Either the sister is no longer harsh, or she's an ex-sister (ie: no longer among the living).

Of course, Mary Jane Stonecastle-Braun could be considered an "ex-Sister", and she certainly was/still is "harsh"

Lirvilas disclosed a bit of said sister's backstory in the answer to my comment over here, thus I suppose quoting him doesn't count as spoiler:

"Jen doesn't talk to her older sister, because she hasn't been in contact for years. Nobody from back home has, including Jane's best friend from high school, one Donna Panks."

So, from Donna's and Jen's perspective, Jane was harsh because she is MIA...

She makes a good point. Donna has talent: she's only cheating herself really

Yeah, we're gonna drop one more piano on Donna before she climbs out from under all that and starts composing her symphony

Do colleges with fine arts degrees in sculpture that include welding also count as shitty colleges?
lirvilas 17th May 2020, 4:34 PM edit delete reply
I don't think that Jen is aware that a BFA is even a thing.

(I'd note that this character isn't speaking for the author, I am contemptuous towards men who consistently smell nice.)

College" as in "University", and "College" as in "Community College".
In Canada, we actually have exact terms for those: University means University, and College refers to Community College. Sometimes, Colleges can become Universities.
lirvilas 17th May 2020, 8:15 PM edit delete reply
...and then there's "college" as in "vocational educational institution", the kinda place where they don't force you to read Faulkner.

in my experiences, I haven't seen any sort of monopoly by university grads on smarts, wisdom, or capability... again, Jen is speaking for Jen.

Qualifications aside, If Donna needs a job, Jen's refusal doesn't do her any favors

Rocket Llama
1st thought: Stripper welders?
2nd thought: That's at least as risky as naked bacon frying
3rd thought: Oh, bikini bar. Why is that her backup plan? And why doesn't Jen just let her grind those grounds? God dammit, now I wanna know

Next destination: Page one

OK, confusing comic page aside, this is why we do comments... they provide a wealth of potential pin-up inspiration:

"stripper welders frying bacon"

what's the internet rule for "everything has a fetish"?

The question is, are we born stripper welder bacon fryer fetishists... or does life direct us to become it

is it rule 64 or just 42

Pfffft, I've heard weirder requests.

Yeah, this whole "welding + bacon + cheesecake" thing may be mixed into the plot a few weeks down the road.

Apologies to all involved.

I kinda feel bad for Jen, too. No one that smells nice wants to date her? D:
lirvilas 29th Jun 2020, 6:44 AM edit delete reply
Her current boyfriend grew up on a pig farm. :(
BlueDragon 29th Jun 2020, 3:11 PM edit delete reply
Oh, that smell.

They built a pig farm not too far from where I grew up (just two long buildings, but still aberrant.) It was awful when the wind blew wrong D: I also lived in fear either myself or my friend (who were not popular) were gonna end up like the end of Carrie o_O

Because teenagers are irrational (both the fears and the sh*t they do.)

it's good to see you're a fair bit stronger than that now.
